Braver Angels Debate: Redistricting

Redistricting (gerrymandering) will be the subject of our next Braver Angels debate, our fourth since early last year, coming 6:30-8 pm on Monday, September 28, at the Mahomet Public Library, 1702 E. Oak St., Mahomet.

The central question: Should Illinois use independent committees to redraw electoral districts?

Supporters of independent redistricting committees argue that removing partisan politicians from the process promotes fair representation. Opponents argue that democracy is best served by keeping redistricting with elected lawmakers who are directly accountable to voters. Can district lines ever be truly impartial, or is political tension over district lines an unavoidable part of representative government?

Note that Braver Angels debates are different. The rules encourage listening and active conversation. They are moderated to ensure civil conversation and hearing diverse viewpoints. No “gotcha” allowed, no winners and losers. For more, watch this 4-minute video explainer or check out this podcast.
